Exiting a defeat of hardened older female sprinters in the Dashing Beauty S. at Delaware Park July 8, Dale P. Ladner's ALVA STARR (f, 3, Lord Nelson–Sittin at the Bar, by Into Mischief) negotiated the hike into graded stakes company with aplomb, routing four rivals in the GII Prioress S. at Saratoga. Sent off the 7-2 third choice, with GIII Victory Ride S. runner-up Dazzling Blue (Into Mischief) the pari-mutuel princess at 3-5, the bay–bred by Ladner in partnership with trainer Brett Brinkman–attended a sharp early pace three wide, turned back a challenge from the heavy favorite going the better of the two nearing the stretch and careered away in the final furlong and a half to gallop in about eight lengths to the good. Jersey Pearl (Bee Jersey), a latest fifth in the GI Test S. Aug. 5, outfinished a disappointing Dazzling Blue for second. Already one of five stakes winners for the late Lord Nelson, Alva Starr becomes his first winner at the graded level. Alva Starr is the second Prioress winner out of the nine-time stakes-winning Sittin at the Bar. Lifetime Record: 5-3-2-0. O-Dale P Ladner; B-Dale P Ladner & Brett Brinkman (KY); T-Brett Brinkman.
