What Run To The Rose Day 2023
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, September 9, 2023
First Race 11:50am AEST

Visit Ladbrokes

Rosehill Gardens is the destination for racing this Saturday, with four Group events highlighting a terrific 10-race program. The Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) will provide a guide for punters looking to bet into futures markets for the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), while the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) has traditionally been a solid reference for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) later in the spring. Throw in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) and Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) earlier in the card, and it should be a quality day of racing.

The track should be in pristine condition, with only a sprinkling of rain forecast leading into the weekend. We should be racing on a Good 4 surface, with the rail in the true position the entire circuit. The first race is set to get underway at 11:50am AEST.

Race 1: BM72 Midway Handicap (1200m)

Bunker Hut looks like a solid chance to start proceedings with a winner at Rosehill as he’s set to resume from an 89-day spell. He was tipped out to the paddock after an eye-catching performance, going on to score by a nose margin at Warwick Farm on June 12. He weaved a passage under Tyler Schiller to secure his second-career victory and now looks to be a furnished galloper upon return. Bunker Hut draws (5) to gain on ideal position in transit, and provided he can unleash his quality turn-of-foot over 1200m, we consider him the one to beat.

Race 2: Class 3 Highway Handicap (1400m)

We respect the push for Take The Kitty in Saturday’s Highway Handicap; however, it’s Ollie’s Secret that gets the nod for us, particularly at the price perspective. His each-way value is hard to ignore with online bookmakers as the son of Adelaide comes through some very strong form. His latest effort was a fourth-place finish behind Principessa at Canterbury on August 16 where he was beaten by less than two lengths. He stuck on gamely on that occasion and the four-year-old gelding was far from disgraced. He gets the services of Zac Lloyd this time, and with a drop into Highway company seemingly ideal, Ollie’s Secret will be the likely leader for a large portion of the straight.

Race 3: BM78 Handicap (2400m)

Too Much Caviar simply must go on top in the third race of the program, but there’s no spoil at the price with online betting sites. He comes out of a near-winning effort behind Wineglass Bay at Rosehill on August 26 contesting over 2000m as the quinella pair cleared out on third. It was a dominant display despite missing out on a winner cheque, and now looks primed getting to the 2400m for the first time this campaign. You know exactly what you’re going to get from this All Too Hard gelding and that’s attempting to make every post a winner, and that’s exactly what he should be doing if they leave him alone up on-speed.

Selections:
  • silks1

    TOO MUCH CAVIAR

  • silks8

    KARMAZONE

  • silks2

    DUKE OF HASTINGS

  • silks5

    YUKON

Race 4: BM78 Handicap (1500m)

Unspoken is a European import set to kick-off his second Australian campaign and looks to be resuming in terrific order for Peter & Paul Snowden. He was luckless for the majority of his debut stint in Australia, managing to find the minor placings twice in four starts. You can make an argument the son of Territories should’ve won on both occasions had he got the breaks at a crucial stage. He returns with an outstanding barrier trial under his belt, and from gate one might need some luck again, but if it comes, Unspoken might be too classy for BM78 company.

Selections:
  • silks2

  • silks3

Race 5:BM78 Handicap (1800m)

Howgoodareyou has seen plenty of early support and it’s easy to see why. The daughter of So You Think has put together back-to-back wins in dominant fashion – particularly her latest victory at Rosehill on August 26. She careered away with the prize, doing so in impressive time over the 1500m. It should be no issues for Howgoodareyou to get over the 1800m on pedigree alone, then adding what we’ve seen on the track, you expect she’ll have no problem outstaying her rivals here. Rachel King will look to lead from gate three and gain a cheap sectional or two throughout, if she does, it could be a matter of ‘how far’.

  • silks2

    MARQUESS

Race 6: Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m)

The Group 2 Sheraco Stakes is for the fillies & mares and is the first of our feature races on Saturday. Zapateo gets the nod for us with some confidence as she returns from a very strong winter preparation in Adelaide, finding third place in both the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Goodwood (1200m). She failed to draw a decent gate in both those Group 1 features, and now returning from a spell with two barrier trials looks perfectly placed to find a peak performance first-up for James Cummings. Gate three on Saturday should mean Zac Lloyd can manage to trail I Am Me every step of the way, then when peeling off their backs, Zapateo can show a devastating turn-of-speed to put them away over the 1200m.

Race 7: Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m)

The Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality is for a talented list of three-year-olds set to line up. Ashfall represents nice each-way value in this race as the Chris Waller-trained colt makes his return from a 90-day spell. He was last seen stepping out at Hawkesbury on June 11, toying with his opposition when going on to score by a length. He gave them all a head start on that occasion, turning in from well-back in the field to scorch down the middle of the course to secure victory. He’s only had two soft barrier trials since, and the Waller team have consistently scratched form much easier contests than this, implying to us they have a very talented three-year-old heading into Saturday.

Race 8: Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m)

The Group 2 Run To The Rose is the traditional lead-up event to the Group 1 Golden Rose later in the spring, and we think the each-way quote for General Salute is a very enticing price to follow into Saturday. He got a chequered passage in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) on August 26 when chasing home Libertad and should’ve finished closer than the one-length margin may suggest. He got bumped at a crucial stage and picked himself up to close nicely into fourth. General Salute draws awkwardly in barrier 10 this time, however, we’re hopeful for a more positive steer, perhaps even managing to lead with a lack of tempo on paper.

Race 9: Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m)

In what may be considered the most wide-open affair throughout the Rosehill program, we’ve landed with Argentia in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes. She’s third-up since joining the Joesph Pride barn with her two starts having plenty of merit. The Group 2 Missile Stakes was a total non-event for her travelling beautifully before striking interference, then ran into a very smart sprinter in the form of Buenos Noches in the Group 3 Show County Quality. Getting to 1300m looks ideal, and with speed drawn all over the map, Argentia should get every chance to produce her best.

Race 10: BM88 Handicap (1200m)

The finale at Rosehill is another tricky affair with chance spread all over the page; however, we’re happy to see if Extremely Lucky can recapture his best. He suffered a massive drift in the market on debut for the Chris Waller yard, starting a $6.50 chance after opening at $3. He ran to the drift, failing to manage even to fill a minor placing in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m). We’re putting it down to the wet track, and now getting back into BM88 company, we hope this means we’ll see the best version of Extremely Lucky in the lucky last.
