Racing heads to the Hunter region of NSW on Friday afternoon as Newcastle Racecourse hosts its feature raceday. The eight-race program is headlined by three Group 3 features: the Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m), Tibbie Stakes (1400m), and Cameron Handicap (1500m).

The rail will sit in the true position throughout the entire circuit, and with a perfect forecast in the lead-up, we should be racing on a Good 4 surface. The first race is set to get underway at 12:50pm AEST.

Newcastle Gold Cup: Alegron

Alegron represents terrific each-way value in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) as the James Cummings-trained gelding comes here third-up into the preparation. He was strong through the line first-up at Hawkesbury over an unsuitable trip in the Listed Rowley Mile before his second-up effort was a non-event in the Wyong Cup on September 1. The son of Teofilo was carved up and pulled out of the race for safety concerns, meaning he never got a crack. He’s fit enough now, and with a lovely barrier (6) to get a mid-field sit with cover, Alegron could prove best at an overs price with online bookmakers.

Tibbie Stakes: Wollombi

Wollombi has been impressive in two starts back for the campaign, and her latest effort in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong simply couldn’t be ignored. She powered through the line, ending in a third-place finish behind Mirra View on September 1. She steps up to the 1400m, and although she may be getting back from the wide draw (11) again, the Newcastle circuit should ensure Wollombi gets every chance to chase down her rivals and chalk up her fifth career win.

Cameron Handicap: Inver Park

Inver Park is set to have his third start for the Kris Lees camp since arriving from Europe and seems ready to peak over the 1500m journey. The son of Pivotal has shown a scintillating turn of foot in both efforts so far – particularly his latest at Rosehill on August 26. He got back to last under Dylan Gibbons and closed off with some classy sectionals, suggesting the barrier was the main detractor in his performance. He comes into this on the minimum weight (54kg), and with barrier seven providing a better opportunity to sit in the top-half of the field, Inver Park should close well again.

Best Bet: Diabelli

Diabelli is searching for his second-career win on Friday afternoon and is unfortunate not to have found the winner’s enclosure more often. He missed the trick last start at this course and distance, stowed away on the inside running rail at a crucial stage on August 29. Once getting clear, Diabelli finished best to run second, and with Zac Lloyd taking the reins this time, we’re confident this gelding by Fastnet Rock can go one better this time.

Value Bet: Nondisclosure

Nondisclosure is set to make his debut for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace barn and takes on a quality maiden field on Friday afternoon. He’s won his last two barrier trials since undergoing a gelding operation and has been going through the gears nicely. We like that Zac Lloyd took the reins at his latest jump-out and got aboard the son of Dundeel, steering him to victory by a length on the synthetic surface at Warwick Farm on August 31. He’s bred to see out the 1400m first-up, and the three-year-old is worth taking a risk on.
