The heaviest tried in a field of eight that entered the gate for Saturday's GIII Iroquois S. at Churchill Downs, Harry Veruchi's WEST SARATOGA (c, 2, Exaggerator–Mo Wicked, by Uncle Mo) was taken off a furious early pace and proved the chief beneficiary, earning 10 points on the Road to the 2024 Kentucky Derby in the process. The gray, an $11,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale, was exiting an all-the-way graduation going a mile at Ellis Park Aug. 5, but was content to settle in midpack this time around, as a headstrong Patriot Spirit (Constitution) set unsustainable fractions up front. Favored Risk It (Gun Runner) appeared to have every chance if the pacesetter was to hit a wall, but West Saratoga quickened up nicely into the final furlong and went on to score cozily. Risk It held for second, while Liberal Arts (Arrogate) rallied from well back to complete the trifecta. Sales history: $11,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. O-Harry Veruchi; B-Two Hearts Farm II LLC (KY); T-Larry Demeritte.
