The heavily backed race favourite was able to get past Mazu (+220) and hold off the late challenge of Masked Crusader (+1200), who flew up the inside rail. Under the urgings of Hugh Bowman, the John O’Shea-trained runner showed that he would be a big chance in The Everest at his next start, after his tough Group 2 win. 2021: Masked Crusader storms home to claim Premiere Stakes The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Masked Crusader (+150) has stormed home from the back of the field to take out the 2021 Group 2 Premiere Stakes at Randwick. Roughie Adelong (+4000) and second favourite Rothfire (+240) ensured a fast run race, with the two going at each other for the majority of the 1200m contest, which set the race up for the backmarkers. At the top of the home straight it appeared as though Tommy Berry had nowhere to go on the race favourite, but he found a gap between runners and the son of Toronado burst through to run away with a dominant victory. 2020: Libertini stamps Everest claim On her racetrack return, the Anthony Cummings-trained Libertini (+1200) has stamped her claim to an Everest slot with a dominant win in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes. Although she went into the race without a slot in the big race, after beating the likes of Classique Legends (+150) and Nature Strip (+120) with relative ease, she appears certain to gain a start in the AU$10 million race. After settling mid-field, Regan Bayliss eased his four-year-old mare into clear air at the top of the home straight, before zooming straight past the leader Classique Legend in the final 100m, to run away with a two-length victory. 2019: Brutal claims the Premiere Stakes The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Brutal (+400) has claimed the Group 2 Premiere Stakes, defeating a game Home Of The Brave (+3000) and Classique Legend (+125). With only a five-horse field engaged for the race, Brutal sat on-speed before letting down with a strong turn of foot to claim the lead from Home Of The Brave with 150m to go. However, he had to fight all the way to the line, as the leader kicked back and Classique Legend flew home down the outside late to finish in the placings.
