They’re back racing in the Top End after two weeks with 58 accepting for the six-race meeting. The feature race is for the sprinters over 1200m (BM76) with the Chris Nash-trained Ideas Man, second in the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) in early August, aiming to make it three straight wins. The dry season is drawing to a close, but there has been no rain in Darwin since April 27. Sunny weather and light winds from various points of the compass awaits come Saturday with a top temperature of 35C. The rail will be in the true position and as usual Fannie Bay will be a good surface.

BEST BET: American Jazz

American Jazz brought respectable form to the Top End from Queensland, but could only manage a first up sixth in a 1300m maiden on July 1. He returned on August 2 to blast his rivals by 12 lengths as favourite to suggest that the four-year-old gelding might well be better than average. The son of American Pharoah carries the same weight and will jump from a similar gate, so if he brings the form of seven weeks ago to the table he will certainly take some stopping.

NEXT BEST: Rising Fire

Rising Fire has yet to win a race at Fannie Bay from five starts, but was close last start when beaten narrowly by The Albion over 1600m (0-58) a fortnight ago. The five-year-old gelding arrived for his second Top End stint from the stable of Sunshine Coast trainer Billy Healey during the Darwin Cup Carnival in July and was a first up 10th over 1300m (0-62). That was his first start after a four-month break and wasn’t far away next start when third over 1300m (0-62) on Darwin Cup Day on August 7 before a disappointing fourth over 1700m (0-64) on Katherine Cup Day on August 19. The son of Headwater has had 16 starts for just one win in his first career start in a 1300m Gold Coast maiden. Last year, Rising Fire was second in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) before coming third in the NT Derby (2050m).

BEST VALUE: Kent Street

In a very competitive race, Kent Street was quoted at $15 on Wednesday with online bookmakers and that caught the eye. The nine-year-old gelding, who has had 68 starts eight wins and 20 minor placings following his debut in January 2018, has produced mixed form since returning from a spell in May. Two wins in early July over 1100m (0-62) and in early August over 1200m (0-62) also included a second over 1100m (BM54) in June. However, the son of Swinging Bachelor has finished unplaced in five other starts this preparation. Peter Stennett and Adam Nicholls are in good form, so anything is possible come Saturday.
