Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted September 30, 2023 Journalists Posted September 30, 2023 Red Barons Barn and Rancho Temescal's DR. SCHIVEL (h, 5, Violence–Lil Nugget, by Mining For Money) took Saturday's GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship for the second time in three years and will in all likelihood carry the main hopes of California in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint over this same course and six-furlong distance in five weeks' time. Favored at 2-1 to repeat the dose, the bay was driven along early to gain some forward position as longshot Sir Atticus (Gormley) led narrowly from the bet-off-the-board Speed Boat Beach (Bayern), making his first start in nearly 10 months for Bob Baffert. Up with the pace passing the three-furlong marker, Dr. Schivel secured the rail spot, but looked a bit hesitant to go through to take up the running inside of Sir Atticus as Speed Boat Beach continued to pester from the outside. As the pacesetter began to weaken with about a furlong to race, Dr. Schivel and Speed Boat Beach came to settle it, with the defending champ proving a courageous winner over a valiant Speed Boat Beach. Dr. Schivel won this race in 2021 before going down to a dirty beat in the Sprint at Del Mar. Sales history: $37,000 RNA Ylg '19 KEEJAN.
