Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 14, 2023 Journalists Posted October 14, 2023 As the rains paid an unwelcome visit for a third consecutive Saturday on the southern shore of Long Island, Godolphin's ETERNAL HOPE (IRE) (f, 3, Teofilo {Ire}–Voice of Truth {Ire}, by Dubawi {Ire}) was trying a distance as short of nine furlongs for the first time in her seven-race career, and in a replay of her narrow victory in last month's GIII Jockey Club Oaks over a mile and three-eighths, got just the better of Neecie Marie (Cross Traffic) in the waning strides. Favored at 3-2 over a turf course listed as good, but perhaps easier than that in reality, Eternal Hope tugged Jamie Spencer up into third passing under the line for the first time as Leave No Trace (Outwork) galloped them along through fractions of :24.42 and :49.59. The complexion of the race changed somewhat when Neecie Marie went for an early run outside of the race favorite with about a half-mile to run, forcing Spencer to ask his mount to hold her spot three wide into the turn. The longshot pacesetters held the call as the field turned into the stretch, and while Neecie Marie looked to have the momentum down the grandstand side, Spencer called on Eternal Hope's superior stamina and managed to grind out the victory. It was a second stateside graded win in two days for Spencer, who put an outstanding ride on the Appleby-trained 3-year-old colt Bold Act (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}} in Friday's GIII Sycamore S. at Keeneland. Lifetime Record: 7-4-0-2. O/B-Godolphin; T-Charlie Appleby.
