Racing Tauranga will mark their 150th anniversary at their meeting on Saturday, and they intend to celebrate in style.

The longevity of the club is something all organisations strive for, and Racing Tauranga General Manager Louise Dean said she is proud to be at the helm of the club when reaching the momentous milestone.

“I don’t think there will be many clubs around Tauranga that would have been in existence for 150 years and still be thriving like Racing Tauranga is,” she said.

“We get good crowds here and we get a lot of community support. I like the fact we can put on racedays that are really inviting for everyone. It is a nice and inclusive feel.

“I get a real thrill about how many people turn up to the races that aren’t necessarily huge racing people, they bring their kids along on the lawn and enjoy watching the horses.

“It is a testament to the community for supporting racing and also the racing community for supporting Tauranga. It is a great milestone.”

To mark the 150th anniversary, Racing Tauranga are offering a variety of entertainment on Saturday to help the local community celebrate.

“We are having a big community day where we are inviting everyone to come in and celebrate with us and thank them for supporting us,” Dean said.

“We have got a lot of kids entertainment, market stalls, and a fashion competition through the ages – with people encouraged to dress up in a different era.

“We have also got a vintage photo booth and vintage cars. It’s going to have a really nice carnival atmosphere.

“Whether people want to spend 10 minutes here or the whole day, there will be something for everyone. It is free entry, and everyone is welcome to come and celebrate with us.”

Dean is expecting a bumper crowd, which is set to continue over the summer months.

“Coming into our Christmas at the Races events, the next two are sold out already. We have had huge support from businesses and locals, it is fantastic,” she said.
