Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted November 4, 2023 Journalists Posted November 4, 2023 GOODNIGHT OLIVE (m, 5, Ghostzapper–Salty Strike, by Smart Strike) joined an elite group of Breeders' Cup repeaters with a thoroughly dominating performance in defense of her title in the GI Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita Saturday. The 11-10 chalk was away alertly from the inside gate and raced in the second flight of horses, just to the inside of Yuugiri (Shackleford) and a few lengths behind the pacesetting Eda (Munnings), blinkered for the first time, and Society (Gun Runner). Committed to an inside run on the turn, the 5-year-old angled out sharply into the three path at the five-sixteenths and had the leaders in the crosshairs at the quarter pole. Sweeping by three deep into the lane, Goodnight Olive was given a few needless left-handers by Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the final eighth of a mile, but the race was well in hand by that point. Yuugiri plugged on to be a game second ahead of Three Witches (Into Mischief) in third. Goodnight Olive is one of two individual Breeders' Cup winners for Ghostzapper, whose daughter Judy the Beauty won this race back in 2014. Goodnight Olive is cataloged to sell as hip 237 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale this coming Tuesday. Sales history: $170,000 Ylg '19 FTKOCT. O-First Row Partners and Team Hanley; B-Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC (KY); T-Chad Brown. REPLAY: Goodnight Olive wins the $1 Million @PNCBank #BreedersCup Filly & Mare Sprint!
