Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted November 4, 2023 Journalists Posted November 4, 2023 For the third straight time, a runner representing Godolphin has proven best in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, as MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) (g, 5, Dubawi {Ire}–Firth of Lorne {Ire}, by Danehill) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after overcoming gate 14 of 14 to just pip the commonly owned Mawj (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), the half-sister to two-time Breeders' Cup winner and defending Mile champion Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Off at 33-10 despite the horrible draw, the 5-year-old was allowed to take up a spot at the back of the field early on as Win Carnelian (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) was kept company by Astronomer (Air Force Blue) and when the latter went on with it into the turn, that allowed Mawj to sit the ideal trip from third. Still back second-last down the backstretch as the leaders went past the half in a searching :45.37, Master of the Seas got underway passing the three eighths and his only choice was to take the overland route into the lane. Mawj was still going very well up front and appeared to have stolen a winning advantage, but William Buick kept after Master of the Seas and was up on the wire to take it by a long nose. Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) turned in a typically game effort in third. He is the third straight Mile winner sired by the phenomenal Dubawi. O/B-Godolphin; T-Charlie Appleby.
