Juddmonte’s Idiomatic Gets a Second 2023 Breeders’ Cup Win for Curlin Saturday

In 2022, Hill 'n' Dale's Curlin got a record-setting three winners on Saturday's Breeders' Cup card. In 2023, he added two more as Juddmonte homebred Idiomatic (Curlin–Lockdown, by First Defence) gave the sire an encore to the win by Cody's Wish in the GI Dirt Mile earlier on the card with a hard-fought victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff.

GI Alabama S. winner Randomized (Nyquist) went to the Distaff lead when the gates flew as Idiomatic stalked in third behind :22.31 and :46.26 fractions. Idiomatic began moving on Randomized with three furlongs to go as MGISW Clairiere–another daughter of Curlin–found a dream seam from the back of the field. It was a scramble to the finish, but Idiomatic, a super-sized filly, prevailed by wearing down Randomized as Spinster second Le Da Vida (Chi) (Gemologist) outfinished Clairiere for third.

Idiomatic, who kicked off 2023 with two optional allowance wins at Turfway Park, capped a stellar year as she won her last five straight, including the GI Spinster S. and GI Personal Ensign S. Overall, she's won eight of nine starts this year and likely sewed up the older mare Eclipse Award with her Breeders' Cup win.
