In a story of ultimate redemption, trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr., who won the 2005 GI Breeders' Cup Classic with future Horse of the Year Saint Liam, but is better known for having spent 10 years away from the game owing to suspension, got his second victory in the race when WHITE ABARRIO (c, 4, Race Day–Catching Diamonds, by Into Mischief), making his first appearance since romping clear in the GI Whitney S. at Saratoga exactly three months ago, pounced on pacesetting 'TDN Rising Star' Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo) leaving the eighth pole and held off a tenacious Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) to win the $6-million GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Saturday afternoon. Arabian Knight jumped alertly and crossed down to the rail as Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) showed speed as expected to fuel the pace. White Abarrio landed in third and eyeballed the top two, while Derma Sotogake, returning to the races for the first time since a sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby fully six months ago, raced handy as well. Arabian Knight and Saudi Crown continued to slug it out at an unsustainable pace, and White Abarrio, perfectly placed throughout, was there to take advantage. Coming after a spent Arabian Knight as Saudi Crown hoisted the white flag a half-furlong earlier, White Abarrio went for home and was across the line first as Derma Sotogake stayed on gamely for second. Proxy (Tapit) came from the clouds to be third. Sales history: $7,500 Ylg '20 OBSJAN; $40,000 2yo '21 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 15-7-1-3. O-C Two Racing Stable & Antonio Pagnano; B-Spendthrift Farm LLC (KY); T-Richard E Dutrow Jr.
