The 2023 Melbourne Cup will be the 163rd running of the Group 1 race held at Flemington racecourse.

The Melbourne Cup is the pinnacle of racing in Australia and one of the most popular races for punters around the world. Considered to be “the race that stops a nation” the Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday of November and attracts, not only the biggest racing crowd each year, but also the most money bet on one race with the top bookamkers.

When was the first Melborune Cup held?

With a history dating back to 1861, the Melbourne Cup has firmly entrenched itself in Melbourne and Australian culture. While it has been consistently held over the years, it did experience a brief hiatus during the war years. Originally covering a distance of two miles (3.219 kilometers), it was adjusted to 3,200 meters (1 mile 1,740 yards) in 1972, aligning with Australia’s adoption of the metric system.
