Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Kyoto Racecourses, including the return to action of Kitten’s Joy’s GSW & G1SP Gendarme: Saturday, October 20, 20184th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($119k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT IT’S LIT (c, 2, Animal Kingdom–Why Katherine, by Whywhywhy) is the only listed produce for his Ontario-bred dam, a four-time winner who finished second in the 2013 GIII Royal North S. and in the 2014 GII Nassau S. A $130K Keeneland September yearling acquisition, the May foal breezed a quarter-mile in :21 3/5 ahead of this year’s OBS March Sale and was hammered down for $310K, the second highest-priced of 15 juveniles by this sire to sell in 2018. B-Betz, Burns, Magers, CoCoEquine & Terra Racing (KY) 11th-TOK, Fuji S.-G3, ¥77,300,000 ($689k), 3yo/up, 1600mT GENDARME (c, 3, Kitten’s Joy–Believe {Jpn}, by Sunday Silence) went two-for-three at two, with a Group 2 win (see below, gate 3) and a runner-up effort in the G1 Hopeful S. Third in Group 2 company on seasonal debut in March, he didn’t factor in the G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas or the G1 Japanese Derby, but is fresh and cuts back in trip for this return to action. His dam was the 2003 champion older mare in Japan and is responsible for SW & G1SP Faridat (Kingmambo) and SW & GSP Fiducia (Medaglia d’Oro). B-North Hills Co Ltd (KY) Sunday, October 21, 20184th-KYO, ¥13,400,000 ($119k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT TOP SOLISTE (f, 2, War Front–Moth {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) is the second foal from Moth, third in the 2013 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, whose Group 3-winning half-sister Hearthstead Mansion (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) is the dam of English SW & Italian G1SP Rave Reviews (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells). The $650K KEESEP grad is bred on the same cross as Group 1 winners Roly Poly and US Navy Flag. The deeper female family includes Japanese sire Kinshasa no Kiseki (Aus) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}). B-Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt (KY) 5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($119k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600m COSMO ROBINSON (c, 2, Take Charge Indy–Lesson Plan, by Forestry) fetched $37K as a KEESEP yearling last fall, then hammered for a solid $130K at OBSAPR after drilling a furlong in :10 flat. The colt’s dam is a daughter of SW & GSP Tutorial (Forty Niner), whose son Dixie Band (Dixie Union) captured the 2009 GIII Arlington-Washington Futurity. B-Champion Equine LLC (KY) 12th-KYO, ¥28,600,000 ($255k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1200m ORO LINCE (f, 3, Discreet Cat–It’schemistrybaby, by Meadowlake) cost just $50K at KEESEP in 2016, but has already recouped that investment and then some, with two wins from four starts, including a front-running score at Niigata Sept. 1 (video, gate 7). The April-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Majestic City (City Zip) and to SP Backstreet Hero (Street Boss).
