One of four Chad Brown entries, SURGE CAPACITY (f, 3, Flintshire {GB}–Strong Incentive, by Warrior's Reward) took advantage of a lucky late gap against the rail and came through to nab her stablemate Fluffy Socks (Slumber {GB}) on the wire in the GI Matriarch S. on Del Mar's closing weekend. Already a two-time graded-stakes winner, the 3-year-old was hammered late down to 9-2 odds and eased back to let most of the field duke it out ahead of her. Trapped against the rail into the lane, she scraped paint to get through a late opening and responded willingly with a strong closing kick to pick her up first Grade I win. Surge Capacity topped a Chad Brown-trained trifecta with Beaute Cachee (Fr) (Literato {Fr}) checking in third.
