Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted January 24 Journalists Share Posted January 24 What Darwin Races Where Fannie Bay Racecourse – Dick Ward Dr, Fannie Bay NT 0820 When Friday, January 26, 2024 First Race 2:19pm ACST Visit Dabble There will be a total of 60 runners for the annual Australia Day meeting at Fannie Bay on Friday with the Darwin Turf Club hosting a six-event program. The feature race will be the Wet Season Series Final over 1200m (0-70) – one of only two $40,000 races held in the Top End outside the Darwin Cup Carnival. It has rained most days throughout January and that is expected to continue for the rest of the week. Come Friday, cloudy and wet conditions are forecast, with the chance of a thunderstorm and a top temperature of 30C. The rail will be in the true position, and despite the rain, it will again be a good surface at Fannie Bay. Best Bet at Darwin: Queen In The North Queen In The North proved competitive in South Australia for leading Adelaide trainers Richard and Chantelle Jolly before arriving in Darwin. The four-year-old mare finished ninth in her Fannie Bay debut over 1100m (Class 2) on Melbourne Cup Day before finishing fifth over 1200m (Class 2) on December 1. The daughter of Headwater has since found her mojo with two seconds over 1300m (0-58) on December 16 after leading in the home straight and 1200m (0-58) on January 13 when she finished strongly along the rails. There were excuses in those two previous starts that thwarted her hopes of securing victory, so if all goes smoothly come Friday, she will definitely take some stopping. Jumping from the inside gate and settling comfortably on the fence, the four-year-old gelding was winding up in the home straight, but at the 100m he was squeezed for room and lost all momentum before finishing four lengths adrift in fourth place. The son of Rich Enuff is worthy of a second chance, although he jumps from a wider gate and will carry an additional 2kg. Next Best Race 3 – #1 Enuff Red (8) 4yo Gelding | T: Chloe Baxter | J: Paul Shiers (59kg) Bet with Neds Best Value at Darwin: Pop Magic Quoted as a $6.50 chance on Wednesday, it would be wise to consider Shecanmixit. A good jockey and 54kg also enhance her prospects. The five-year-old mare made a serious impact in her first Top End start on December 8 when she jumped from gate one and broke the track record for 1000m (56.02) after decimating maiden opposition by 9.8 lengths. Not a lot went right for the daughter of Danerich on December 30 when she finished ninth over 1000m (0-58) after drawing barrier seven. Shecanmixit exited gate two a fortnight ago and finished strongly before coming second over 1000m (BM54) after Make An Effort pinched a winning break turning for home.
