Newmarket
From memory this was my first NZ Cup that I attended, only this one was special. Had a mate that knew a first starter called… Blue Water! Was told to keep it quiet as they expected it to pay $20 plus on the day. Now, was told it was smoking up the tracks and connections were pretty sure the filly could beat the boys in the first race at Addington on Cup Day. Well, that was good enough for me, took majority of my money hidden in my sock in drawer and popped into TAB on way. Put $150 win and $250 place on it at a time I was earning just over $100 per week. Met the lads on course thinking that in a few minutes my life would be changed and would have to buy more socks on the way home….Well, don’t think I can find video of race but if anyone has one I would love to see it, but here is my memory of it…. Settled fairly handy then Keith Whall punched it out to the lead…. With about 400m to go I was getting excited….had 3 lengths on field…sadly driver went too early and was run down for 4th😬 Looking at result many years later I forgot what a great field it was…and it seemed nobody kept a secret because it went out 2nd fav…. Seems those that owned her was into banking so must have got on. Walked home after Cup feeling very deflated. Horse was very over rated, won the DB Fillies in a sedate 2.03 only due to a great Jack Smolenski drive. Took months to fill up the sock…

You may remember, did this horse show a positive drug test later on back in Aus…. I thought it did but may be wrong

I can't recall a positive test but that certainly doesn't mean there wasn't one. I know about the Aussie Raider Juniors Image who won the 1971 Interdominion Grand Final at Addington beating Stella Frost. He was disqualified a week later after a positive caffeine result
