Japan’s Remake Takes Riyadh Dirt Sprint

The Japan contingent went two-for-two in the major races early on Saudi Cup Day as Koji Maeda's REMAKE (JPN) (h, 5, Lani-Sariel {Jpn}, by King Kamehameha {Jpn}) rallied late in the $1.5-million G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint to run down Steve Asmussen's Skelly (Practical Joke). Rider Yuga Kawada waited early before attacking in the stretch and sailed smoothly by while wide for a facile two-length win. Skelly, who was in the leading contingent early, saved second while top fellow American raider Bold Journey (Hard Spun) flashed home from the back for third. Pacesetting Jasper Krone (Frosted) was fourth in his first go on the dirt.

Third in this race behind Elite Power (Curlin) and Gunite (Gun Runner) last year, Remake is trained by Japan's Shintani Koichi. He tried the 2023 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen after his stint in Riyadh, finishing fifth, and has since been first or second in four starts spread between Japan and Korea prior to his Dirt Sprint score.
