Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 3 Journalists Share Posted May 3 What Northam Stakes Day Where Northam Race Club – 175 Yilgarn Ave, Northam WA 6401 When Sunday, May 5, 2024 First Race 1:37pm AWST Visit Dabble The Northam Race Club will host its marquee meeting this Sunday afternoon, with a very competitive seven-race program set down for decision. With perfect autumn weather forecast across the weekend, it is expected that the track will improve into the Good range after being rated as a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances. The rail will be in the +5m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race on Northam Stakes Day set to jump at 1:37pm AWST. Northam Stakes Tip: Western Empire After a torrid 18 months in Victoria, Western Empire returned home to Western Australia and was impressive first-up in The Joey (1200m) at Ascot. The six-year-old gelding was slightly held up behind the speed; however, once he got into clear galloping room, the son of Iffraaj flashed home to finish third. William Pike has a very good record on this galloper (9:5-1-2), while the slight rise in trip second-up should make Western Empire extremely hard to beat in the Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m). Northam Stakes Race 6 – #11 Western Empire (4) 6yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (55kg) +230 with Bet365 Best Bet at Northam: She’s Imminent She’s Imminent has improved in between her first and second starts this time in and should be peaking third-up as she steps up to 1300m. This daughter of Impending is one from one at the track and trip, while Chris Parnham sticks after riding the mare in both starts this preparation. With good speed expected up front, Parnham will settle She’s Imminent towards the rear of the field and look to finish off strongly down the outside. Best Bet Race 7 – #6 She’s Imminent (6) 4yo Mare | T: Daniel Morton | J: Chris Parnham (55.5kg) +320 with Neds Next Best at Northam: Rubick Lass Rubick Lass broke her maiden when grinding home in a driving finish at Pinjarra over 1413m on April 21. The David Harrison-trained filly appeared to get stronger the further she ran, so getting out to 1600m for the first time should be no issue. From barrier six, Joseph Azzopardi will settle in the one-one position behind the speed and attempt to replicate the last-start victory.
