Caulfield racecourse’s jockeys room is set to receive another makeover after complaints the area is too cramped and not fit for purpose.

Racing.com’s Terry Bailey had the $160million redevelopment in the crosshairs on air and ridiculed the jockeys rooms.

“I haven’t been to Caulfield as yet to see the facilities, but I’ve had that many people come up to me, complaining about it – trainers, everyone, the public,” Bailey said.

“I went to Mornington yesterday, I had that many people say ‘good on you, Terry, we were all cheering when you said it on television because it’s a disgrace’, that’s what they all told me.

“I am going off feedback, not just from 10 people, 20 people, I’m even going off feedback from officials – when it comes to how it’s been built and how it’s been done.”

Newspaper reports have Melbourne Racing Club officials defending the redevelopment and said the changes to the jockeys rooms were evidence they were willing to listen to feedback.

Bailey said the Melbourne Racing Club had been too focussed on property development and had forgotten that horse racing was their core business.

“I have heard people say, and I have nothing against the Melbourne Racing Club, I love clubs that are advanced and push on, so it is not a knock, but they are more interested in the property development than they are actually in racing,” he said.

Melbourne Racing Club’s CEO Josh Blanksby quit his post last week, although this is not believed to be linked to the redevelopment.
