The BBC has confirmed that three women murdered in a crossbow attack in Bushey, Hertfordshire are the wife and two daughters of BBC racing commentator John Hunt.

Carol Hunt, 61, died alongside two of her daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, following an attack at the family's home on Tuesday evening.

The suspected killer, Kyle Clifford, 26, is currently on the run and believed by police to be armed. A major manhunt is underway across the Hertfordshire and north London area of England.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Chief Superintendent Jon Simpson from Hertfordshire Police said, “Our overarching objective today is to protect public safety and to locate Kyle Clifford, who is wanted in connection with the murder of the three women in what we believe is a targeted incident.

“We have extensive police resources deployed to various locations in north London and also the Bushey area.

“The manhunt also involves armed police officers and specialist search teams responding at pace in the wake of what has been a horrific incident involving what is currently believed to be a crossbow, but other weapons may also have been used.”

A former policeman, John Hunt, a longstanding and widely respected commentator for BBC Five Live and Sky Sports Racing, had been on duty at Lingfield racecourse on Tuesday. Along with his work in horseracing, he is regularly part of the BBC sports team covering the Olympics.

His many friends in the racing world include ITV racing presenter Matt Chapman, who said in a post on social media, “No words needed for what has happened to @HuntyCaller and family today. Impossible to comprehend the pain. Just know we are all here for you John. We love you pal – racing loves you.”
