Visit Dabble

Racing will head to Callaghan Park on Friday for the first part of the two-day Rockhampton Jockey Club Winter Racing Carnival. The $100,000 Rockhampton Newmarket will headline the nine-race card on the opening day, with racing set to kick off at 11:29am AEST. With no rain on the forecast for Thursday and Friday, the track should improve into the Good range, while the rail will be in the +2.5m position for the entire circuit.

Rockhampton Newmarket tip: Rockribbed

Rockribbed returned with a dominant win at Ipswich over 1200m on June 22, when the Tony Gollan-trained galloper settled behind the speed before taking over at the 200m mark to run away from his rivals late. The Night Of Thunder gelding has only had five starts in Queensland for Gollan, and he should only improve second-up. Angela Jones will push forward from barrier 15, and if she can settle in the first six, Rockribbed can record back-to-back wins.

Best Bet at Rockhampton: Simbu

Simbu was last seen finishing an underwhelming seventh place at Doomben before going out for a lengthy spell. However, the son of Spirit Of Boom has been to the trials before this fresh start and led from start to finish to record an ultra-impressive 4.3-length victory. If Angela Jones can get him to bounce like he did in his trial and find the lead, Simbu will prove very hard to run down.

4yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (60kg)

Next Best at Rockhampton: I Am Lethal

On debut for the George Carpenter stable, I Am Lethal finished in an unlucky fourth place over 1400m at the Sunshine Coast. The I Am Invincible progeny picked his way through the field from the back and made up plenty of ground in the final 400m. From barrier four, Jake Bayliss shouldn’t have many problems finding clear air this time, and with even luck, I Am Lethal will go very close.
