The 142nd edition of the Birdsville Racing Carnival will kick off on Friday afternoon, with the first of six races scheduled to jump at 1:34pm AEST. With warm weather forecast for the rest of the week, the track surface will remain firm and the rail will be in its true position for the entire circuit.

Best Bet at Birdsville: Benevento

Benevento has won back-to-back races since returning to the racetrack this preparation, winning by a combined 11.6 lengths at Mount Isa over 1200m and 1450m. The Jay Morris-trained gelding is undefeated for his new trainer in two starts and heads to Birdsville for his first look at the dirt track. With Chloe Lowe’s 2kg claim, expect Benevento to settle on the speed and prove too strong for his rivals again.

Best Bet

Race 2 – Benevento Silks #1 Benevento (4)

Next Best at Birdsville: Pompeii Empire

Since switching from the Jolly stable in Adelaide, Pompeii Empire has been plying his trade in Darwin with Kym Healy and hasn’t missed the placings from five starts. This son of Magnus chased down a tearaway leader at Fannie Bay two starts back before backing up two days later to finish a gallant runner-up in a tougher race on Darwin Cup Day. With good speed expected in this small field, Pompeii Empire can settle at the back of the field and run over the top of them late.

Next Best

Race 4 – Pompeii Empire Silks #4 Pompeii Empire (1)

5yo Gelding | T: Kym Healy | J: John Keating (56kg)

Next Best Again at Birdsville: Stroma Aster

Stroma Aster was made to carry a huge weight when on debut for his new trainer at Roma, as the Matt Kropp-trained galloper boxed on from behind the speed to finish third over 1000m. The son of Stratum Star won over 1400m at Gatton two starts back, and now that he rises to 1200m, he will appreciate the longer trip. Chloe Lowe will take 2kg off his back, and from barrier one, Stroma Aster will get the run of the race and prove hard to hold out.

Next Best Again

Race 3 – Stroma Aster Silks #3 Stroma Aster (1)

4yo Gelding | T: Matt Kropp | J: Chloe Lowe (a2) (64kg)
