Race favorite DETERMINISTIC (c, 3, Liam's Map–Giulio's Jewel, by Speightstown put in a late charge to nail Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) in the final strides and take the last turf edition of the Virginia Derby. Marred in traffic for much of the running, the GIII Gotham Stakes winner needed a way through and had to go wide to find it, closing down the center of the Colonial Downs turf course to just get up in time. With the ride, jockey Manny Franco picked up his sixth winner on the closing day card. Lifetime Record: GSW/GISP, 7-3-1-1.

O-St. Elias Stable, Langone, Ken, Duncker, C. Steven and Vicarage Stable; B-Hinkle Farms; T-Christophe Clement.
