Thirteen hopeful jockeys have started their training as apprentices in the revamped Apprentice Jockey Training Program (AJTP) by Racing WA.

Eleven trainees completed Racing WA’s 12-month Trackwork Rider Training Program (TWTP), which provides industry participants with nationally accredited training and helps them earn their Certificate III in Racing.

The graduates of TWTP are now moving forward to pursue a Certificate IV in AJTP, which provides a pathway for riders to enhance their expertise and understanding.

Sharyn Lancaster, the training manager for Racing WA, mentioned that the program offers support for up-and-coming jockeys.

“The newly refined four-year apprentice jockey training program provides the perfect pathway and support for young riders on their journey to becoming senior jockeys,” she said.

“The program allows the apprentices more time to ride with a claim, while they learn the practical and theoretical side of horse racing with a cohort of their fellow apprentices.”

Peter Hall, from Racing WA Jockey Coach, mentioned that the first-year TWTP participants are thoroughly equipped for their apprenticeship journey.

“We’ve seen success over the past few years from our apprentice program and look forward to growing the next generation of jockeys on the back of the track work riders’ program,” he said.

Coach John Claite from Racing WA highlighted the range of career paths for the incoming apprentices.

“It’s a big step for these young people, embarking on a new and diverse career in racing, and we all look forward to helping them grow on the road to success in the industry and in life,” he said.

The latest group of trainees known as the AJTP cohort began their program in October, aiming to offer apprentices an organised and encouraging setting for enhancing their abilities and expertise.
