PATTERNRECOGNITION (h, 5, Adios Charlie–Almost a Valentine, by High Cotton), last seen annexing the GII Kelso H. at Belmont Sept. 22, broke on top and never looked back in the GI Cigar Mile H. at the Big A. Given a 5-1 chance as most of the tote attention went to well-traveled Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy) and lightly raced Copper Town (Speightstown), the bay showed the way through swift splits of :22.88 and :45.68. Clearly going better than his main foes heading for home, he shook free in upper stretch and fended off longshot True Timber (Mineshaft)’s late advances to hit the wire a half-length to the good in 1:34.98. Sunny Ridge (Holy Bull) rounded out the trifecta. Sales history: $420,000 2yo ’15 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 11-5-5-0.
