Hayes bullish on Evaporate in Guineas

There are plenty of horses to follow from the star-studded Lindsay Park stable this spring, but co-trainer Ben Hayes couldn’t be happier with Evaporate (NZ) (Per Incanto) heading towards the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas.

The son of Per Incanto only broke his maiden in August but has since won three more times, all at The Valley, with the latest coming at Gr.2 level in the Stutt Stakes last Friday.

Evaporate is by no means out of Guineas betting at $11, but with Broadsiding a current $1.75 favourite, Hayes thinks his galloper may be a touch soft in the market.

“We’re quite excited about Evaporate, he was an impressive winner on Friday night and he’s kind of snuck under everyone’s radar,” he said.

“He’s going into a Caulfield Guineas and he’s got the Sydney horses to beat, but I think of the Victorian horses, he’s probably the number-one contender.

“His journey started out not great – as a two-year-old he had a couple of runs and was just a little bit colty. Since he’s been gelded, he’s come out and put four in a row.

“We stretched a little bit to buy him at the yearling sales and got a great group of people in … I think everyone’s just really enjoyed the process and him improving.

“Whenever you have a fast horse, it’s fun … it makes the trainer’s life easy; happy horses and happy owners.

“He just keeps improving and stepping up to the mark and I think he will again. He’s come through the run really well and it’s quite exciting to have a horse like him heading into a Caulfield Guineas.”
