Australia will soon be a step closer to a national tote pool, following revelations Tatts is looking to merge smaller states into the Victorian tote pool by next year.

News Limited is reporting Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory have made submissions to their state regulators to start the ball rolling.

The move will further strengthen the Victorian tote pools, which the ACT and New Zealand already bet into, and isolate NSW, who will effectively be up against the rest of the country.

Previously it has been reported that the Tatts tote was holding less than $500 in 60% of their markets, which is remarkably low, given how popular betting is in Australia.

If the merger takes place without any dramas the push for a national tote will grow, but it will take some negotiating with Racing NSW, which is a traditional rival of Victoria.

Tabcorp has been in a steady decline for some years as the online bookmaker industry has flourished, while returns from brick and mortar wagering establishments have faltered.

Tabcorp has began the process of reinvigorating their business following the appointment of former AFL supremo Gillon McLachlan as CEO.

Tabcorp is reportedly hopeful of rolling out the changes in early 2025.
