Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 9 Journalists Share Posted October 9 What 2024 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas Where Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria When Saturday, October 12, 2024 Prizemoney $3,000,000 Distance 1600m Conditions Set Weights 2023 winner Griff (15) | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Ben Melham (57kg) Visit Dabble The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) headlines a stacked 10-race meeting at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon. A field of 13 three-year-olds will duke it out for the $3 million on offer, with Godolphin’s Broadsiding expected to dominate the time-honoured event. Punters and bookmakers alike both expect this to be a one-act affair, but is there perhaps an upset brewing in the Guineas? 2024 Caulfield Guineas odds Horse racing bookmakers are taking no chances on Broadsiding, installing him as a $1.60 favourite to claim a fourth Group 1 triumph on just his ninth career start. The only other runner at a single-figure quote is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Mayfair ($7), who finished a half-length off the favourite when they clashed in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m). Angel Capital ($10) and Evaporate ($13) are the best of the local hopes, with upwards of $18 available for every other runner in Saturday’s feature. 2024 Caulfield Guineas speed map As expected with Waterhouse & Bott runners, both Mayfair and Wanaruah look to be the speed influences in the Guineas. The likes of Public Attention, Feroce and Evaporate will all look to land a stalking position, while Rue De Royale and Tropicus look set to lob midfield. Race favourite Broadsiding will be alongside key market rival Angel Capital as the pair turn for home, with both likely to come storming home down the heart of the track. Caulfield Guineas 2024 preview & form Broadsiding had no right to win the Golden Rose first-up from a spell — a feat that had never been achieved prior. He looks to be destined to chase Cox Plate (2040m) glory after Saturday, which shows just how much class he has on his rivals. James McDonald will have him at the rear of the field throughout, but when asked for the ultimate effort, Broadsiding should put this race away within a couple of strides. Angel Capital won in arrogant fashion at Moonee Valley in Listed company over 1200m, then took out the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) after sprinting sharper in the slower section of the track. The Harry Angel colt will likely be alongside Broadsiding when they turn for home, and despite being two or three lengths off the favourite in terms of class, he looks to have more than enough ability to account for the remainder of this field. Rue De Royale was left flat-footed when the sprint went on in the Stutt Stakes (1600m) and lost by 3.3 lengths to Evaporate, who he lines up against once more. However, his juvenile form includes running 1.8 lengths off Traffic Warden, who wasn’t beaten far by Broadsiding when the pair clashed in the Golden Rose a fortnight ago. He lacks the class that some of his rivals possess, but Rue De Royale certainly looks capable of running into the minor money. The likes of Mayfair, Wanaruah and Private Life are also good chances to fill out the exotics, but that looks like what the rest of the field is playing for.
