The $20 million Everest (1200m) headlines the action at Royal Randwick on Saturday afternoon, with a field of 12 being selected by slot holders to climb the mountain and claim top honours in the world’s richest race on turf. The mouthwatering 10-race program is supported by the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m), where Pride Of Jenni and Fangirl are set to go head-to-head, while the country horses step out in the $2 million Kosciuszko (1200m).

The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with some light rainfall forecast in the lead-up, punters can expect the track to remain in the Soft range for race-day. 2024 Everest Day is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm local time.

Race 1: Group 3 St Leger Stakes (2600m)

A field of nine kicks off the program in the Group 3 St Leger Stakes (2600m), where Etna Rosso appears well-placed after a strong performance in the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) on October 5. The son of Decorated Knight hit the line well compared to some of his key rivals, and although he tacks on 6kgs after his bold display, the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) winner seems to take improvement with every start. Kerrin McEvoy should get a soft run throughout the journey from barrier one, and if he can position himself off the rails at a key stage, Etna Rosso is a major player in the opener.

Race 2: Big Dance Wild Card (1600m)

The Ciaron Maher-trained Berkshire Shadow is dropping back in class after contesting the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 5. The five-year-old was far from disgraced finishing mid-field after some torrid luck in transit, and prior to that was impressive running third behind Here To Shock in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle. The 3kg claim of Zac Wadick should prove extremely valuable, and provided Berkshire Shadow can storm across from barrier 11, this guy will prove hard to hold out despite the hefty weight.

Race 3: Group 3 Reginald Allen Quality (1400m)

Jellicious represents good each-way value with horse racing bookmakers in the Group 3 Reginald Allen Quality (1400m). The Snitzel filly is yet to break her maiden in two starts but was closing off impressively behind Amelita first-up at Canterbury on September 18. Stepping up to the 1400m second-up shows plenty of intent from the Ciaron Maher barn, and with Tommy Berry an excellent booking to do the steering from barrier four, Jellicious should get every chance to claim her first win against a very even bunch of fillies.

Selections:

Race 4: Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m)

The Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman-trained Quickster makes the trip to Syndey after a pass mark first-up at Caulfield on September 21. She was strong through the wire in a slowly run affair, making strong inroads to suggest a step up to 1600m would be ideal second-up. Jamie Kah gets legged aboard this progressive four-year-old mare, and although we could be a start early with Quickster, the each-way price available is too juicy to ignore.

  • Quckster silks4

Race 5: The Kosciuszko (1200m)

Front Page is searching for his third-straight win in The Kosciuszko (1200m), however, Far Too Easy should give him the race of his life at three times the price. The son of All Too Hard got within 2.3 lengths in last year’s edition and was enormous considering he drew out in barrier 12, His recent barrier trial at the Gold Coast on October 8 suggests he’s flying heading into this $2 million feature, and with barrier one allowing Craig Williams to stalk Front Page every step of the way this time around, Far Too Easy can press the short-priced favourite in the concluding stages.

Selections:
  • Far Too Easy silks2

Race 6: Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m)

Southport Tycoon wouldn’t have been out of place lining up in the Everest after an ultra-impressive victory in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 27. He produced the fastest closing sectionals of the entire meeting on that occasion, knocking off Growing Empire and I Wish I Win who both line up in the $20 million feature. Mark Zahra sticks aboard the son of Written Tycoon, and with the gun-run likely to fall his way from barrier five, Southport Tycoon must be considered the one to beat in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m).

Race 7: Group 1 Everest (1200m)

The Everest will be run under Group 1 status for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon and there have been plenty of betting moves in the lead-up. I Wish I Win now shares favouritism alongside Joliestar, with the pair installed at the $6.00 mark, The three-year-olds Traffic Warden and Growing Empire are both $7.50, while Bella Nipointa ($9.00) continues to drift. Is there a changing of the guard in Australia’s sprinting ranks?

Race 8: Group 3 Silver Eagle (1300m)

Nobody missed the run of Port Lockroy first-up at Randwick on October 5. The son of Better Than Ready was a good thing licked on that occasion, running over backsides in the concluding stages to get within a half-length of Ostraka. He’s poorly weighted compared to last start, with Ostraka getting a 5kg swing in the weights, however, with an extra 100m to build into his work from barrier five, punters can expect a bold effort by Port Lockroy second-up into the 2024 Silver Eagle.

Selections:
  • Port Lockroy silks8

Race 9: Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m)

The Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m) has been built as a race in two, as Pride Of Jenni attempts to hold off the challenge of Fangirl. The latter must be considered the bet in the race at the current price, with the $4.00 seemingly too big compared to the evens about Pride Of Jenni. Major Beel could throw a spanner in the works as a speed influence, and Zougotcha should give Fangirl a lovely cart into the race as well. It would come as a shock if James McDonald had Fangirl worse than six lengths off the leader turning for home, but regardless of how it unfolds, punters can expect a ding-dong finish as two stars of the turf do battle in the 2024 Kings Charles III Stakes.

Selections:

Race 10: BM88 Handicap (1400m)

The Peter Snowden-trained Behtar makes his Australian debut, and despite being first-up after a 349-day spell, the French import appears ready to strike. He’s had three strong barrier trials in preparation for this first-up assignment, and although the 1400m appears short of his best trip moving forward, he could simply have the class to figure in the finish. He gets every chance to make an impression from gate one, and with form behind the likes of Eliyass in France, Behtar warrants an each-way ticket in the lucky last.
