Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 24, 2024 Journalists Share Posted October 24, 2024 In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Niigata Racecourses: Saturday, October 26, 2024 5th-TOK, ¥13,720,000 ($90k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT TOSEN PENELOPE (f, 2, Maximum Security–Hassenah {Brz}, by Red Runner) becomes the first Japanese starter for her first-crop sire (by the now Japan-based New Year's Day) and is the first produce from her dam, a four-time winner at group level in her native Brazil and that country's champion older mare of 2019. Hassenah, whose sire is a Storm Cat half-brother to French champion Gold Away (Ire) (Goldneyev), foaled a filly by Highland Reel (Ire) this past January. B-Takaya Shimakawa (KY) Sunday, October 27, 2024 4th-TOK, ¥13,720,000 ($90k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600m ANGEL LADDER (f, 2, Nyquist–Tiz Miz Sue, by Tiznow) was purchased for $725,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale by North Hills's Koji Maeda, who campaigned this filly's close relative an $500,000 KEESEP grad Serein (Uncle Mo) to a pair of victories–including a debut success at two–and a third placing in the G3 UAE Oaks. The Grade I-winning dam, a daughter of Grade III winner Sue's Good News (Woodman), is a half-sister to eight winners, including Bulletin (City Zip), victorious in the inaugural running of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint six years ago. Christophe Lemaire sees fit to take the call.
