Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 26, 2024 Journalists Share Posted October 26, 2024 Some 3 1/2 lengths separated Gun Song (Gun Runner) and 'TDN Rising Star' TARIFA (f, 3, Bernardini–Kite Beach, by Awesome Again) in second and third, respectively, in back of divisional-leading 'Rising Star' Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) in the GI Cotillion Stakes at Parx Sept. 21, but the tables were turned Saturday afternoon, as Tarifa refused to lay down tightly inside of odds-on Gun Song in deep stretch and edged that foe for a narrow victory in the GII Mother Goose Stakes at Aqueduct. Flavien Prat was intent on making the front with this year's GII Rachel Alexandra Stakes and GII Fair Grounds Oaks winner, but she veered in at the start and bobbled a few strides later before assuming command as John Velazquez positioned Gun Song right off her flank. While Tarifa was busily ridden past the quarter pole, Gun Song was more confidently handled and looked to have the upper hand for the sprint home, but despite leading deep into the final sixteenth of a mile after a shoulder-to-shoulder battle, Tarifa proved slightly the gamer of the two. Pretty Ana (Quality Road), who was bothered by the eventual winner at the break, steamed home for third in a what-might-have-been effort. Lifetime Record: 9-5-1-1. O/B-Godolphin (KY); T-Brad Cox.
