Selections for Breeders’ Cup Saturday at Del Mar

Who do you like? TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack makes his picks for Breeders' Cup Saturday at Del Mar.

Race 4: GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint–#10 Scylla (10-1)

Scylla ran a very good second going two turns in Del Mar's GI Clement L. Hirsch, then returned to Bill Mott's Saratoga base and cut back to this distance with another solid second-place finish in the GI Ballerina just three weeks later. She's been freshened since, is drawn nicely on the outside and is more than capable of running a fast enough race to pull off the upset. Will be making a sizeable exacta box with Ways and Means, who is a very deserving favorite.

Race 5: GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint–#2 Motorious (GB) (8-1)

I really hate backing deep closers in any race–especially turf sprints–but horse-for-course Motorious will likely go off too big of a price for me to stay away. The beaten favorite in last year's Turf Sprint is coming in under the radar for Phil D'Amato. Will be boxing with the most likely winner and very imposing Cogburn.

Race 8: GI Breeders' Cup Classic–#13 Newgate (20-1)

Newgate has form that makes him a player at a big price for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert in this loaded Classic and he has every right to move forward off his very good third in the GI California Crown off the layoff. Fired two visually impressive bullet workouts at Santa Anita for this and made a fantastic impression during training hours at Del Mar this week.

Race 12: GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile–#9 Domestic Product (7-2)

Domestic Product has really taken it to the next level since turning back in distance and should get another fantastic set up here. Would prefer this to be contested around one turn, but not letting that keep me away. Post Time always shows up and is an interesting option to consider for the gimmicks at double digits.
