The Darwin Turf Club will host its annual Melbourne Cup meeting this Tuesday, with 46 horses accepting for the six-event program. Up to 25mm has fallen in the Top End since the meeting on October 26, with showers tipped on Sunday and Monday. Come Tuesday, the forecast is for mostly sunny conditions with a top temperature of 35C.

BEST BET AT DARWIN: CHANGE IS COMING

Recent form suggests Change Is Coming will be hard to beat in this five-horse field, and he did open as a $1.50 favourite with horse racing bookmakers. The five-year-old gelding saluted in July before coming sixth as the $1.90 favourite over 1100m in 0-66 grade on August 5. Gary Clarke’s runner led throughout to win in 0-64 class over 1100m in September, but he couldn’t hang on as the early pacemaker when second behind Mr Have A Chat over 1200m in 0-70 class on October 19.

NEXT BEST AT DARWIN: EXTREME EMOTION

Extreme Emotion is one of the form horses in the Darwin and looked terrific when she led from start to finish over 1600m against 0-58 opposition on October 19. In her previous three starts over 1300m, the six-year-old mare finished strongly in the home straight for a win in 0-58 class and two close seconds at 0-58 and BM54 level. Getting to the front seemed to do the trick last start, and she is a genuine contender despite stepping up in grade.

BEST VALUE AT DARWIN: HEROIC SPIRIT

Heroic Spirit had mixed success for Murray Bridge trainer John Peacock on two trips north, finishing sixth in a Class 2 over 1200m in September first-up for Tom Logan. Drawing the outside gate (9) over 1300m in BM54 grade on October 5, the five-year-old gelding travelled three deep in third place and went wide turning for home to seal victory by two lengths. He only has to get closer to the fence to enhance his prospects on Tuesday.
