The Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) headlines the bumper 10-race meeting at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon, with a field of 13 three-year-old fillies set to battle for the $1.5 million purse on offer.

Will Chris Waller and James McDonald claim a third-straight win in the race with Aeliana? Or is there somewhat of an upset brewing in the penultimate Group 1 event in Victoria for the year?

Horse racing bookmakers were quick to install Aeliana as a $3.30 favourite in Thousand Guineas betting following her success during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Zeitung ($4.50) holds the second line of betting after an impressive win on Derby Day, while there is a fair gap back to Lovelycut ($11) and Geegees Mistruth ($12).

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained pair of Too Darn Lizzie and Dominetta are the likely speed influences in the 2024 Thousand Guineas. Outside of those, Double Market and Stage ‘N’ Screen look set to hold prominent roles, with each-way hopes Matisse and Supercilious looking to settle midfield. Market fancies Aeliana and Zeitung will likely be giving their rivals a fair start at the top of the straight, with both looking to have the last look at the leaders.

Aeliana was equal parts impressive and arrogant when claiming the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) last time out. The Castelvecchio filly gave her rivals a start and a beating under James McDonald, and in a race that is likely to pan out in a similar way, it should set up perfectly for her to swoop. Aeliana got the better of Caulfield Guineas runner-up Feroce in convincing style, which looks to be the right form-line heading into Saturday’s feature.

If there is any danger to the favourite, it will come from one of Zeitung or Matisse. Only a length separated the pair in The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington on November 2, yet Matisse is a $17 quote compared to Zeitung’s $4.50 with PlayUp. Whether they have the ability of Aeliana is the question, but if the favourite is having an off day, they will be the ones waiting to pounce.
