The $1 million Group 2 Hunter (1300m) headlines the action at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, with a bumper 10-race program set for decision. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with the track rated a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, punters can expect that rating to hold true on race-day morning with light rainfall predicted leading into the weekend. All the action for 2024 Hunter Day is scheduled to get underway at 12:35pm local time.

The Hunter Tip: Briasa

Briasa has won five of his six starts and appears to be a star on the rise. The son of Smart Missile cruised to victory in his most recent outing on the Kensington circuit at Randwick on October 30, and although it was only a BM88, it was hard not to be impressed with the fashion he dispatched his rivals by 3.1 lengths. Tyler Schiller will need to find cover from barrier 10, and provided he can land within striking distance turning for home, Briasa will prove hard to hold out with 53kg on his back.

Spring Stakes Tip: French Ruler

French Ruler appears set to peak third-up in the campaign after two strong performances over 1200m. The son of Nicconi was putting in the big strides against the older horses at Randwick on October 26 but ran out of time as he motored through the wire from near last. The 1600m against his own age group should be ideal, and with Nash Rawiller taking the reins from stall seven, French Ruler is a terrific each-way bet with Picklebet in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m).

The Beauford: Spirit Ridge

Spirit Ridge was brave when trying to fend off Lindermann first-up at Randwick on October 26. He was only narrowly headed, and produced something similar first-up last campaign, before going on to score second-up in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben. Kerrin McEvoy should be able to dictate terms from barrier eight, and provided he can tick over a couple of soft sectionals, Spirit Ridge will give a bold sight in The Beauford (2300m).

Best Bet at Newcastle: Bullets High

The Joseph Pride-trained Bullets High just missed out on back-to-back wins at Rosehill on November 2 but looks perfectly placed to make amends third-up. The progressive four-year-old charged through the line to suggest a step up to the mile would be ideal, and with Nash Rawiller electing to stick, Bullets High should justify the short price with Playup and go one better in this BM78 contest.

Next Best at Newcastle: Flying Crazy

Flying Crazy caught the eye first-up in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on November 2. The son of Flying Artie was no match for the likes of Bella Nipotina and Sunshine In Paris but produced some impressive closing sectionals to suggest he’s in mix amongst weaker company. One of his five wins came at this course and distance, and with Reece Jones set to get a perfect run in transit from gate five, Flying Crazy can add to that winning record.

Best Value at Newcastle: Sonofdec

The Jay Hopkins-trained Sonofdec represents terrific each-way value with horse racing bookmakers in this BM72 Midway. The Kermadec gelding has been crying out for a step out in journey, unsuited at back-to-back starts over 1300m despite hitting the line well. He produced a dominant three-length win third-up last preparation, and provided he can recapture that peak, the $17 is simply too big to ignore.
