Trainer John McArdle has chosen to keep promising filly My Gladiola in Melbourne, with the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22 as her primary target.

While the $2 million Inglis Millennium (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday was considered, McArdle believes staying home is the best long-term approach.

“They (Inglis representatives) rang me and asked if I was coming,” McArdle said.

“With the Blue Diamond as her target, it’s a big ask for a young horse to go to Sydney and then come back down and race again.”

The I Am Invincible filly is the current $4 favourite with horse racing bookmakers for the Blue Diamond following her dominant debut win in the fillies’ division of the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Sandown on January 25.

“I usually take them off the bridle before race day, but she ran around a bit in her jump-out, which made it hard for Jamie (Mott, jockey) to do that,” McArdle said.

“That was the question she needed to answer, and it was good to see her respond.”

My Gladiola will return to Caulfield for Saturday’s Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m) as she continues her preparation for Victoria’s premier juvenile race.

“She is a big girl, carries a bit of condition, and still has a fair bit on her, but she did a bit of evens on Saturday and she was spot on doing it,” McArdle said.

“All the data was good, she was lovely and relaxed, so she looks in really good order.”
