Emma-Lee Browne is approaching the Colac Cup on Friday with a degree of trepidation as it will be Rhinoceros’ (NZ) (Vadamos) first time running over 2000 metres in his 41-start career.

The six-year-old gelding has become a country cups king over summer with wins in the Dunkeld and Camperdown Cups among his past three starts and, although he is bred on staying lines, Browne said he has always wanted to race too keenly to get out in trip but has shown some signs of maturing.

Browne said she still harbours some doubts about how Rhinoceros will handle the 2000m.

“I’m not sure. It’s his first time up to 2000m which could be a bit testing for him although he’s started to settle down now,” Browne said.

“Will (Gordon) knows him well and we’re hoping he can get the job done. Now he’s a bit older he may be able to get the trip.”

Browne said Rhinoceros is part of the family and they love what he has achieved for them.

“He’s done such a great job. We are so proud of him. He was one of the first horses we sent over from New Zealand when Dave came over and he’s still doing the job for us,” she said.

“We love him. My daughter rides him every day. He’s been a super horse for us.”

Rhinoceros put David and Emma-Lee Browne on the map in Melbourne in 2021 when he won city races at Sandown, The Valley and Caulfield in the spring of that year.

With his recent return to form with those victories at Dunkeld and Camperdown, Rhinoceros has taken his career record to nine wins from 41 starts.

In the Colac Cup he will clash again with Khoekhoe, who finished second to him in the Camperdown Cup.
