The 40th running of the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) headlines a bumper 10-race card at Flemington this Saturday, with a field of 16 set to do battle for the $1 million on offer in the premier three-year-old race in Victoria this autumn.

Angel Capital and Sepals loom as the ones to beat having won key lead-in races, while Sydney-based Point And Shoot is looking to elevate from BM78 level to Group 1 winner.

Outside of those three, it is an open edition of the Australian Guineas, with plenty of winning hopes amongst the field.

2025 Australian Guineas odds

Australian Guineas betting markets have it down to three chances. Angel Capital heads the betting at $4 with Neds following a dominant win in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m), while Sepals ($6) and Point And Shoot ($6) are the only other runners at a single-figure quote. Group 1 winners Goldrush Guru and Savaglee (both $12) are the best of the rest, while Feroce ($13) and Henlein ($21) received early backing once markets opened.

There looks to be plenty of speed engaged in this year’s Australian Guineas, with the likes of Feroce, Stay Focused, Goldrush Guru, Opening Adress and Savaglee all looking to hold prominent positions. Market fancies Sepals and Point And Shoot will look to camp just off the speed, with race favourite Angel Capital likely to stalk his main rivals throughout. Henlein, Ndola and Royal Insignia will be the ones hitting the line hard from the rear of the field.

Sepals was an arrogant winner of the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) last time out. Having sprinted sharply from a midfield position, the Cliff Brown-trained gelding eventually put 3.3 lengths on his rivals, and it could have been a lot further had Blake Shinn not throttled him down late. He should gain a similar run from barrier three on Saturday, and with even luck, Sepals can become the ninth horse to do the CS Hayes Stakes and Australian Guineas double.

Angel Capital is a deserving favourite based on his career to date, but from barrier eight and on his first look at the track, he could find this to be a tricky assignment. Ndola was taking ground off Sepals late in the CS Hayes and appeals at a big price, while Group 1-winning Kiwi Savaglee could prove hard to run down from a front-running role in his Australian debut.
