Journalism Bests Barnes in San Felipe Showdown

The question going into Saturday's GII DK Horse San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita was whether unbeaten $3.2-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga star Barnes (Into Mischief) could win at two turns. He may have if it weren't for a new star on the scene, GII Los Alamitos Futurity winner Journalism (Curlin). Barnes, favored at 2-5, set the pace in the San Felipe, while Journalism bided his time back in fourth as the 3-1 second choice. When Barnes came off the turn and sprinted for home, Journalism–running for the first time as a 3-year-old–reeled him in with gusto and finished powerfully, about two lengths on top. Rodriguez (Authentic) was a distant third. After Berlin Wall (Practical Joke) scratched Saturday, the San Felipe was worth 37.5 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner, instead of 50.

Following the race, jockey Umberto Rispoli told FanDuel that Journalism was in “beast mode.”
