Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 22 Journalists Share Posted March 22 TIZTASTIC (c, 3, Tiz the Law–Keesha, by Tapit) swung into action four wide into the long Fair Grounds straight, took command a furlong from home and kept on gamely to take Saturday's GII TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby by 2 1/4 lengths, earning 100 points and securing himself a spot in the field for the GI Kentucky Derby five weeks away. Off at odds of 15-2 exiting a fifth to Coal Battle (Coal Front) in the GII Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Feb. 23, the $80,000 Keeneland January short-yearling and $335,000 graduate of that auction house's September Yearling Sale dropped himself out to the back of the pack to race last but one as Sam F. Davis Stakes hero John Hancock (Constitution) showed the way through an opening quarter that was lively enough in :22.99. Still near the tail as they passed the six-furlong pole, Tiztastic commenced a middle move that carried him into a position just in back of centerfield with four furlongs to travel, while John Hancock was clinging to a tenuous advantage after three-quarters in 1:11.03. Accelerating sharply and pinching ground ominously at the inside on the turn, Tiztastic was steered out into about the four path as Built (Hard Spun), who had enjoyed the run of the race just in the slipstream of the front-runner, got first run and set sail for home. John Hancock signed off readily, but Tiztastic came calling for the lead at the furlong grounds, wanted to lug in late but held safe. Chunk of Gold (Preservationist) was a good second ahead of Instant Replay (Maximum Security), who ran on well from the second half of the field to be third. Sales history: $80,000 Ylg '23 KEEJAN; $335,000 Ylg '23 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 8-3-1-2.
