Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted March 29 Journalists Posted March 29 Tappan Street (c, 3, Into Mischief–Virginia Key, by Distorted Humor) surged to the lead in upper stretch and held off favored Sovereignty (Into Mischief) late to win the GI Curlin Florida Derby in stylish fashion Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The 2-1 shot rushed up and over from his outside draw and was chasing the pacesetters three wide on the first turn. He was fourth down the backstretch as Madaket Road (Quality Road) opened up a clear lead, but was making eye-catching progress on the far turn and ricocheted to the lead out of the turn and into the stretch. Sovereignty, who had been well back early, was closing late, but Tappan Street sailed under the wire 1 1/2 lengths in front, completing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.27. Purchased for $1 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, Tappan Street was a debut winner going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Dec. 28.
