‘Rising Star’ Quietside Outfinishes Simply Joking in Oaklawn’s Fantasy Stakes

Shortleaf Stable homebred and 'TDN Rising Star' Quietside (f, 3, Malibu Moon–Benner Island, by Speightstown) got the measure of unbeaten Simply Joking (Practical Joke) in Oaklawn's GII Fantasy Stakes Saturday. Simply Joking spent most of the race in front, setting fractions of :23.89 and :48.09 while Quietside loomed menacingly to her outside before throwing down the gauntlet in the stretch. The two battled down the lane, pulling well clear of the rest, with Quietside outfinishing her rival late. Runnin N Gunnin (Gun Runner) finished a distant third.

“I knew it was a two-horse race and I just tried to apply as much pressure as I could without using too much and saving some for the end,” jockey Jose Ortiz told Maggie Wolfendale on TVG.

With the win, Quietside, whose trainer John Ortiz was featured in Saturday's TDN, picked up 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. Winner of the GIII Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn last out, Quietside placed in both the GI Spinaway Stakes and the GI Alcibiades Stakes last fall.
