Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 3 Journalists Share Posted May 3 California campaigner Kopion (f, 4, Omaha Beach–Galloping Ami, by Victory Gallop) made it three in a row and proved her year-best 110 Beyer Speed Figure was no fluke as she made the trip to Kentucky and proved much the best in the $1-million GI Derby City Distaff Stakes at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Last seen winning the GII Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita in February, where she'd earned that 110 Beyer, she was a surprise winner of the GI La Brea Stakes on Santa Anita's opening day in December. Far from the 37-1 she went to post that day, Kopion was 5-2 Saturday, racing midpack behind :22.30 and :45.19 fractions. She swung to the outside on the turn, reeled in MGSW Hope Road (Quality Road), who finished behind her in both the Santa Monica and the La Brea, and leveled off for a daylight, approximately three-length victory. She had never run in the mud previously and is unbeaten at five starts at seven furlongs or less. Hope Road held for second, while 'TDN Rising Star' and last year's GI Test Stakes winner Ways and Means (Practical Joke) finished third. Final time for the seven furlongs was 1:21.76.
