Quickfire Ballydoyle Juvenile Double As Lambourn’s Half-Brother Action Dominates At Galway

ACTION (IRE) (c, 2, Frankel {GB}–Gossamer Wings {MGSP-Eng, SP-Ire}, by Scat Daddy), a half-brother to Galileo's Derby and Irish Derby hero Lambourn, had been third behind stablemates New Zealand and Isaac Newton at The Curragh last month and was sent off the 4-9 favourite to double up after the latter had done the business for the yard at Goodwood in the preceding minutes. Latching straight onto the front from the break, the homebred showed a more generous cruise than his half-sibling and travelled strongly into the short straight as Atlantic Thoroughbreds' newcomer Perisher (Australia) loomed. Kicking away from that Joseph O'Brien trainee close home, he had 1 1/4 lengths to spare at the line as they pulled away from the remainder. With Ryan Moore on duty in Sussex, it was Lambourn's Derby-winning rider Wayne Lordan who was able to enjoy the spin.

“Wayne knows the family inside out and they have been very good to him,” stable representative Chris Armstrong said. “He is a smashing colt, he had a lovely run at the Curragh first-time out and just five minutes before this race jumped off, the horse that finished ahead of him won at Goodwood, so I'd say it was a very strong maiden. It was his first time out in front and he was very green and raw but once he asked him, he found the line well. You probably won't see the best of him until he goes up in trip and is now in the mix for something like the Golden Fleece on Champions Weekend and then maybe a Futurity Trophy or another Group One in France. Wayne said once he pulled up, he took one puff, chilled and walked back calmly. He has the right attitude and if he follows in his brother's footsteps he'll be nice.”

The winner is the third foal out of the G2 Queen Mary runner-up Gossamer Wings (Scat Daddy), whose flagbearer Lambourn was without anything more than a French provincial Listed win as a juvenile. A full-sister to the Stakes scorer Lavender Chrissie and a half to the GIII Victory Ride Stakes winner Baby J by J Be K, as well as Bernstein's Stakes winner and GI Secretariat Stakes-placed Laureate Conductor, her yearling full-brother to the winner unfortunately died.
