The public pegged him at 1-5 following his only career start June 13–a 2 1/4-length score going five furlongs at Santa Anita in which he notched a field-high 86 Beyer Speed Figure–and they were right on the money. Desert Gate (c, 2, Omaha Beach–Theogony, by Curlin) stalked fellow winner Punto Forty (Nyquist) early in the GIII Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar, had command by the :45.31 half, and opened up at the top of the stretch, then simply kept going. Juan Hernandez eased Desert Gate up well before the wire as the two dominated the short field by open daylight. They covered the six furlongs in 1:10.37.

Chief Stipe O'Neill-trained stablemates Pavlovian (Pavel) and Brigante (More Than Ready) were second and third.

“He looks like a good one,” said Hall of Famer Bob Baffert of Desert Gate on TVG immediately after the race. It was Baffert's fourth consecutive Best Pal victory.
