Collected’s Mansetti Coast To Coast In the King’s Plate

Making just his second start around two turns and trying 10 furlongs for the first time in his career, Al and Bill Ulwelling's MANSETTI (c, 3, Collected–Gidget Girl, by Sky Mesa) made the most of his inside draw, leading every step of the way to take out Saturday's 166th running of the King's Plate at an overlaid quote of 18-1.

Exiting an on-pace victory in the local GIII Marine Stakes, his first go at a two-turn route, the $40,000 OBS April purchase was sent into an early lead by young Pietro Moran and though he had to do some work through the opening quarter-mile in :22.93, the bay relaxed through the middle furlongs, covering the half in :47.45 and got a bit more of a breather after six panels in 1:12.48.

Still going strongly on the turn and with nothing looking like making any serious inroads from the back, Mansetti upped the tempo while going farther in front, and although the distance began to take its toll in the final furlong, Mansetti was home first in 2:02.27 for the mile and quarter on the Tapeta track. Tom's Magic (Justify), a dual stakes winner on the grass, closed off well for second while trying a synthetic surface for the first time while favored Notorious Gangster (Classic Empire) came home third.

It was the third King's Plate in the last four years for trainer Kevin Attard, who saddled the fillies Moira (Ghostzapper) and Caitlinhergrtness (Omaha Beach) to the victory in 2022 and 2024, respectively.
