Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted Saturday at 09:07 PM Journalists Posted Saturday at 09:07 PM George A. Mellon's Patriot Spirit (Constitution), a smart last-out winner of the Reigh Count S. going seven furlongs at Colonial July 26, punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint with a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's 'Win and You're In' GIII Vosburgh S. at the Belmont at the Big A meeting. Well-backed as the 5-2 second-choice, he pressed in second through an opening quarter in :22.76, hit the front while traveling nicely beneath Javier Castellano at the top of the stretch and took care of business from there to book his trip to Del Mar. The final time for seven furlongs was a sharp 1:21.84. Crazy Mason (Coal Front) was up for second. Favored Scotland (Good Magic) was third. “I expected the effort,” winning trainer Michael Campbell said. “I don't want to sound like I'm pompous or anything because it is difficult to win a horse race, there is nothing more difficult. On this occasion, in this spot, with this horse being that right, I didn't think he could get beat.” He continued, “He will be going to Keeneland for that meet and then, of course, we'll go by Del Mar, then I don't know what we'll do. I don't like to get too far ahead of myself.” Patriot Spirit was second after leading in the stretch in the one-turn mile Knicks Go Overnight S. in the slop at Churchill Downs May 3. The bay's previous form was highlighted by wins in the 2024 Illinois Derby going 1 1/8 miles at Hawthorne and the 2023 Inaugural S. going six furlongs at Tampa. Pedigree Notes: Patriot Spirit, a $95,000 KEESEP yearling turned $235,000 OBSMAR breezer, becomes the 40th graded winner for Constitution. Patriot Spirit's dam Mistical Plan (Game Plan), winner of the 2008 GI Princess Rooney H., is also responsible for the unraced 2-year-old colt Builder's Remedy (Liam's Map), a $285,000 OBS June purchase by West Point Thoroughbreds.
