Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted February 5, 2019 Journalists Share Posted February 5, 2019 2016 G2 Godolphin Mile hero One Man Band (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}-Musicanna {GB}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) has been retired after an old tendon injury flared up trainer Doug Watson confirmed to the Dubai Racing Club notes team. The Sheikh Saeed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum colourbearer almost had a fairytale ending to his career, returning off a 999-day layoff and finish a nose second to stablemate Stunned (GB) (Shamardal) in the Listed Dubai Creek Mile on Dec. 20. Also runner-up in the 2016 G3 Firebreak S., the bay retires with a mark of 17-8-2-1, and $930,310 in earnings. Stud plans are pending. “The year after he won the Godolphin Mile…he ended up with a tendon issue,” Watson told the Dubai Racing Club notes team. “We had to put him away for the year and brought him back the next year. His other tendon got a small lesion in it, so we had to stop there. We basically thought he was retired and I didn’t want to train such a nice horse with two bowed tendons. “I started the horses back this year in August and I happened to be down talking to the foreman and walked by his stall and he was whinnying. I thought, well, he’s just sitting here, let’s just get him started and see how it goes. If something happens a little bit, if the tendon goes, we’ll stop. He actually came out of [the Listed Dubai Creek Mile] fine, but just about a week later, [the tendon issue] reappeared. We scanned it and, you know, I wasn’t going to push him anymore. He has done the world for us. He got us on the map.” Bred by Richard Pegum in Ireland, the 8-year-old was purchased for €95,000 out of the 2011 Goffs November Foal Sale and made his first two starts for trainer Charlie Appleby in Great Britain. Out of the SW Musicanna, who was third in both the G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. and the G1 Falmouth S., One Man Band is from the same family as Slovakian champion Overdoes (GB) (Starborough {GB}) and French highweight and G1 Prix Royal Oak victor Royal Gait (GB) (Gunner B {GB}).
